SUBJECT: BIGWU National Elections

Dear Comrades,
As all are aware, yesterday, Wednesday, September 7, 2022, was the day on which members of the Union would have voted for their candidate/s of choice in the National Elections to hold office for the next four (4) years on the BIGWU Central Executive.
Unfortunately, notwithstanding the best efforts of the Supervisor of Elections and a team led by the Consultant retained to conduct the elections on the Union’s behalf, some unforeseen challenges would have arisen that did not allow for ballot boxes to arrive within the specified time at a few units of some branches of the Union, and which would have affected approximately one hundred members or thereabouts.
Consultation has been had amongst the leaders of the contesting teams, the Supervisor of Elections and the Elections Consultant and it has been agreed to finalise the counting of ballots pending arrangements to be made to ensure that affected workers desirous of voting but who were unable to do so through no fault of their own, are allowed to do so.
Specifics are to be referred to the Union’s General Council for final deliberation of the matter and we beg your understanding and patience as we seek to ensure that there is no compromise of the democratic right of any worker to exercise his/her right to vote. It is expected that a date for final voting will be fixed on/before September 14, 2022, and the results of the elections will be announced by this time.
